The ESDIS Project at The HDF Group

The HDF formats are the standard file formats for storing data for NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) mission, a coordinated series of polar-orbiting and low inclination satellites for long-term global observations of the land surface, biosphere, solid Earth, atmosphere, and oceans. As a major component of the Earth Science Division of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, EOS enables an improved understanding of the Earth as an integrated system. The goal of The HDF Group's involvement with the Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) project is to provide high quality support and services for the use of HDF software in the EOS mission.

Through a NASA-funded follow-on contract to our previous EOSDIS Evolution and Development (EED) contract, The HDF Group carries out work in the following broad areas:

Current Project Goals

NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS)

HDF-EOS Tools and Information Center

The ESDIS project plays a vital role in maintaining the long-term, high quality development and maintenance of core HDF software. The user support, documentation, tool development, and support of the HDF4 and HDF5 APIs is greatly enhanced by the stable, continuous support from NASA's ESDIS projects. The collaboration between NASA and the The HDF Group began in 1992 and will continue into the future.
